Meet our team

We have a strong core team, led by  Katy MacMillan and Tara McGregor. They are highly experienced social researchers. Nadia Hyder and Ann Elliott are full time members of the team.  

We also work with a pool of experienced associates. This means that we have a bank of expertise to use on specific areas of work. 
Katy MacMillan

MA Honours (First Class – Geography and Management Studies), University of Glasgow

MPhil Urban Policy and Practice, University of Glasgow
Katy has worked in research since 2001, and was previously Director of ODS Consulting. She is a highly experienced social researcher, skilled at managing both large and small-scale projects at national and local level. She specialises in qualitative and mixed method research. She has an inquisitive, analytical approach, and is excellent at summarising complex and rich qualitative and quantitative information in a simple, accessible and user friendly way. She is skilled in using innovative research methods, and working with a wide range of research participants. Katy also brings particular expertise in equalities monitoring and research into equality and disadvantage.

She is highly familiar with the ethics of undertaking research with public sector stakeholders, community based projects, schools and with young people. Katy has managed a number of major evaluations for funders – including the Scottish Government, sportscotland, Creative Scotland and others. 

Katy writes very clearly, and is committed to reporting in plain English. She is very good at conveying complex ideas in a simple way, without losing their nuances. She regularly produces literature reviews, evidence papers and think pieces. For example, Katy was the writer for ‘Is Scotland Fairer?’, the Equality and Human Rights Commission’s five year review of equality. 

Tara McGregor

Tara is a highly skilled researcher with strong skills and experience of leading major research projects, including evaluations and developing learning materials and training programmes. 

Tara previously worked with the Scottish Government as part of the Faststream programme. She undertook a number of policy roles, including in the Lifelong Learning and Skills team. Here she had responsibility for the SCQF and worked on wider lifelong learning policies. During her time in Government she led on three separate consultation processes.

Tara co-founded Research Scotland, having seven years research experience within ODS Consulting. She has undertaken a wide range of research and evaluation activity related to equality, inequality and vulnerability.

Tara has used a coaching approach in her organisational development work over the last ten years. She formalised her experience in this field by gaining an ILM Level 5 Diploma for professional coaches and mentors. She has supported third sector leaders to develop more enterprising approaches, public sector officers to improve their profile and impact and individuals to improve their personal effectiveness and plan for their future.

Nadia Hyder
Pg Dip Drug and Alcohol Studies, University of Glasgow

Nadia moved into research after completing a postgraduate diploma in Drug and Alcohol Studies from the University of Glasgow. Nadia has very strong writing skills, and regularly undertakes literature reviews and research papers.

Since joining our team Nadia has developed her quantitative and qualitative research skills, and has been involved in a range of different projects. She had recently reviewed data and carried out interviews with young people, young carers, older people, vulnerable service users and young people at risk of offending. Nadia is particularly skilled in focus groups and one to one interviews. 

Office manager and research assistant
Ann is our Office Manager and Research Assistant. She has worked in research for more than 20 years. She has a strong eye for detail, and brings expertise in data management and organisation. Ann regularly organises large scale surveys and analyses survey responses, bringing strong quantitative analysis skills. 
Ann leads our data management work for all consultation analysis activity we undertake for the Scottish Government, involving a systematic and accountable approach to organising, coding and analysing data. Ann also undertakes all proofing of draft and final reports, to ensure they are of a high quality before they are submitted to our clients.
MA Honours (First Class – Geography)

Andrew is an acknowledged expert on community regeneration, joint working and social inclusion in Scotland. He is a highly skilled facilitator with a calm, relaxed and engaging style. Andrew is in the process of retiring – which may take some time! He works with us as an Associate, focusing strongly on facilitation work.

MA Honours (Geography)

Christina has 25 years experience in strategic policy development, delivery and evaluation, investment planning and programme management.
She specialises in analysis of qualitative data and is comfortable dealing with complex information. She is a core part of our team for all consultation analysis work.
